I tried following your instructions to brighten the underexposed areas and add more color. I somehow assumed that to be the foreground.
1) In both images I was able to lighten the foreground so that there was some detail and color, but that made it very difficult to keep the land in the middle of the image and the dark clouds reasonably dark and with contrast (they look muddled). The curve did not want to follow my directions. Had a mind of its own.
2) I found that I know nothing about RGB curves which made it very difficult.
Thanks Joe S

Curves do like to wander around...sometimes I feel like I'm hearding cats...

Remember to use control points to hold the curve in place..it usually takes 2 points to keep a curve from twisting around your adjustment.  What I do is I place the mouse on the image and right click.  choose mark.  then I go to the grid and place control points down the curve from my adjustment 2 of them spaced about a grid block apart usually holdthe curve in place for your adjustment.  Then i make the adjustment.  This keeps things simpler for me...

Your image looks fine for what Mike wanted to get across...

Greg
