Greg or Mike,

i have spent hours to try make a nice view of the late noon view of the islands.
The first i did only in RGB -CM3 mode. Very difficult.
I am not satisfied with the endprodukt. I could not bump the colors.
The start contrast is very big. I lowered it, perhaps to much.  But i must do that, otherwise you see nothing in the foreground.

The second one i did only in lab mode.
About the same problems, but I could bump the colors.
I like the lab-version. but the contrast is better here.
Perhaps I give it a try on a later time.

Reading about the indentifiable neutral!
In my opinion you could use a netral on a gray cloud part ( RGB mode), or the  2 white caps near the road.
I have used the white caps as a neutral and shift  up the  tied neutrals upwards.
After that i have much manipulated the curves. I can't repeat it.

your second pass at this  is ok...as you have seen Mike was looking for more drama in the image....

You can revisit this if you want to or let it go...

indeed, I have seen it afterwards.
I do these not again. I did not understand , Mike  looks for more  drama, then  i had not tried to make it lighter.
It is a underexposed picture, so I thought , to trie it make right.

Right for you is acceptable.  The goal was to increase the contrast and color. 
Mike and I both are thinking about a better way to describe the changes he was looking for.  I went for the solution you did and had one heck of a time trying to get it right...

Then I saw Mikes posting and was quite suprised It was a slap the forehead moment...

Not to worry..it is only 1 image lots more to come...

Greg, you mention Mikes posting. Where?

Fritz, I like your image. You were trying to do the same as I. That is bumping up the lightness of the foreground and adding color. When upping the lightness the curve takes a big swing up and is difficult to get it back down to darken the clouds and the land in the middle of the image without making them muddy.
