Under exposed Longcrested Eagle because of bright sky behind, taken at the Rapture rehab centre Kwa Zulu Natal Drakensberg. I tried, but the feet should be more yellow. (b) image is my attemp with CM.

Ganna,

What a cool image..I like the drama of the background so I tried to leave it alone.  I show my curves to you so you can see that there is more that can be done.

Later in the class we will work on "local" color like the talons.  Please feel free to ask questions about what I ahve done and I'll give you as much information as I can to help you out...

Greg, I am impressed. I am still in the crawling stage and therefore a bit confused. Firstly my setup of the curves appear different to your picture of the curves. I presume you set the shadow and highlight points and the saturation is up. I do not understand the shape of the curve in "b". Btw I also learned a new English word "Talon" (had to look it up in the dictionary) What marker is on the Talon?
Thanks.
Kind regards

Ganna,
My set up is configured by using the wrench button in the CM window.  I choose to use the Zone system for my lightness curve since it makes the most sense to me.  I set the shadow and Highlight points by right clicking on the image and setting them..I then thresholded them around to find the best pixels for each.

I made local changes to the L curve to enhance various tonal values in the image.  I went for contrast and brightness in areas I thought made a difference to the overall image.  The tree, the sky, and the underside of the Eagle.

To get the Talons brighter I used the "mark" function of CM.  To do this on any image right click and choose "mark"
(Shot1.jpg) this places a inverted triangle on the curve. (Shot2.jpg).

I then place 3-4 points on the curve to "pin" it in place and prevent it from pivoting around the point I marked.

I then moved the point on the curve closer to the center to increase the yellow.  (note the change in the beak area as well as the talons.) Shot4.jpg
