Worked in LAB and set shadow near paw of one of the dogs and set saturation to 3.4.
I didn't do anything fancy with the curve eg lizard tail.
I feel I am not reshaping the curves as I expect you would want to happen here.
Greg, in your commenst to Ganna you showed a curve (shot1.jpg). How did you get the L histogram to be over to the right. At what stage of the processing did it appear like this. My final histogram is a gentle bell shape.

Hey benny,

The curve you see is a partial screen shot..the rest of the histogram is still there...

The histogram shape is not as important as whether you see detail in the tops of the dogs' heads, and on the sides of the dogs.  Your version is pretty good, although the curve could be just a bit steeper to bring out the roughness of the texture more.
