Thanks so much for this wonderful forum. I'm learning a lot from reading the the other participants' messages. Greg, I understand that I am not restricted to CM only but can use other functions in PS also
Here, I first did Luminosity Masking (Bob Johnson of Earthbound light.. where I first read of CM ie curves on steroids!)
That brought the detail out of the shadows. I am unfamiliar with the real place in the image; not sure what it really looks like(colour wise) but I first used the LAB mode-> thresholding and saturated. I saved then opened in the RGB where I try to get more green in the trees. My image might be too light, but here it is. Finally it was sharpened with Smart sharpen.

The place in question is Bryce Canyon in the state of Utah USA.  It is a very striking landscape and the orange colors are quite vibrant.  I would say that you image is light yes...but a worthy rendition none the less. 

There is a bit more drama in the original.
