Made same curve shape for both LAB a and b.
Steepened ciurve by moving top right and lower left about half a square inward.
This brought out the colour but not sure how to bring a little more detail out of the shadows.

Benny this is another case where the lizard tail might help...if shadows or highlights are you r goal then look at using the lizard tail...it is a good starting point for that kind of problem.

Personally, I don't see a problem with the shadows.  To get more shadow detail, you'll need to trade away detail in the other parts of the image - either in the mid tones or the highlights.
