Sorry for being late...
I've done the first example a bit quickly, and unfortunately, I find it a bit contrasted
I used LAB, as I found RGB very saturated
Most of the time I use RGB frr rough color Improvemet and LAB for anything else particularly for density improvment, but I haven't got any scienific approach for that it's just intuition...

please forgive any language mistake, as english is not my native tongue.

infinitech,

There are reasons to go to different color spaces.  I would say that the image will deceide for you.  If you do not like the look in one color space try using another. 

I will switch from color space to another to accomplish a specific goal.

Some adjustments are just not the best for LAB.  Other adjustments are really bad for RGB...

Try this image again and stick to one color space...try the one that is least comfortable for you.  You really will get a better understanding of the tool if you play around with it for a while..youneed not get a perfect image back from the process to learn something new about curves.
