I opened this image in Photoshop CS3 and converted it to sRGB working space since it did not have a color profile embedded.  I then created a Threshold adjustment layer to identify the Shadow and Highlight points and laid down two markers at those points.  The image was then opened in Curvemeister in LAB mode but unfortunately the markers did not show up.  I then set the Shadow and Highlight points;  switched to the All Tabs view and steepened the A and B channels until the specular highlights on the tip of the flower were barely visible.  I also compared the LAB version with RGB but the RGB mode had a severe Cyan/Blueish color cast so I remained with the LAB version.
