I set the shadow point using thresholds & increased the contrast at the light end of the scale.

Howard,

This one needs only a better highlight point..look at the shadows...I'm not certain about them....and tons of saturation....otherwise you have it. 
Good texture.

Okay, here's version 2.  I think it is considerably better.  More shadow, more highlight (okay, a highlight, period), and a lot more saturation.
