I am not too sure where I was going with picture in reference to the vivid colors,weahter they were really supposed to stand out

This looks just about right.  These are subjective judgements you're making with the "Man from Mars" technique.  I can't see from the screen shot whether this is the case or not.  Just make sure you're not blotting out any details by creating solid swaths of color.
