My picture sure looks disgracefull, but I understand this proses. I am not sure how to select parts where the contrast are not high between them; easily in CM instead of taking lots of time in PS. I tried to lighten the darker parts, but at the same time get the darker sky reflection in the water, without darkening the reflections of the lighter buildings and boats

The sky looks great.  I think what's happening is that you have included too much of the water reflection in your mask.  Keep what you have already for the mask curve, but shift the curve to the right, so that it straddles the rightmost peak in the histogram.  That will confine the effects of your curve to the sky.

New effort by using the magig wand tool to do selections. Mike, the mask curve was moved more to the right and for the wife and kids factor I painted the 2 boats on a second run.

That looks real good, Ganna.

Watch out for the magic wand - no problems in this case, but it's famous for making jaggy selections.
