Hey Barry,
One of the things Mike talks about in the video is "stealing contrast" from areas of the image that are not using it...he shows you a way to do that by lowering the shadow end of the curve and using the difference to make the rocks stand out.
Another way to achieve this is to use a shadow threshold. it does compress the range a bit but It seems to be holding the detail in the rock quite nicely.
