Your image is a great improvement over the original. The problem with picking one of the lighter colored stones is that it's hard to be sure that you have a real neutral. In this case, the foam of the water makes a reliable neutral, more so than any individual rock.
Still, your choice would have worked out, it's just riskier, and as Greg points out (using the hue clock as a sensitive color detector), there is some unusual coloration in the shoreline. Is orange an acceptable color for the edge of the river? Maybe, maybe not. You have to be the judge of that.
