Joyce,
Check to make sure the GCR is set to light.  It is in the bottom of the curves window under the grid.

Then work on the K channel a bit to see if you can free up the shadows.  They are really locked up...

Need some help understanding your comments.
I believe I changed the gcr to light after your recommendations but saw no difference.what am i doing wrong?
Could you explain K

In CMYK the K channel is the "black" ink.  Your image has too much black ink in it.  The GCR setting helps describe the "ink" in my understanding...you set it to "light" so that it is not getting multiplied by CM to fit a specific printing setting.

The adjustment of the K channel is an interesting area to explore.  It has some very dramatic effects on the shadow density of your images.  Give it a test flight and see if you can open up the shadows and let some of the hidden detail shine through...not to much though...Remember you need blacks or the image will look flat.
