You have a fine mask..nothing major wrong there...The issue is really in the "A" channel of LAB.  Once you have made the tassels black using the mask.  You need to move the line vertically as shown in shot2.  Shot1 is my A mask curve.

To do that you need to manually link the end points of the A curve by clicking on one and then Ctrl-Clicking on the other.  This sets up the red connecting lines and links the points together.  Then using the arrow keys move the line up or down until the red shadows are minimized.
