I'm into week 5's materials and trying to use masks but have hit a stopper.  In the video example the red tassels are made black by dragging the lightness curve down.  As I work on it, I need to drag the lightness curve up to make the tassels black.  What am I doing wrong?  See attached.

Click on the diamond shape at the top center of the curve margin to flip your curve around so that it matches the video.

It's also cool to have black on the right - in fact Dan Margulis and Greg advocate this.  I use black on the left because it's the way most people do it already.

My use of this relates to how I think of the gray scale. 
Darker tones were always on the high end of the exposure curve.

Lighter tones were on the lower end.  I just "feels" right to me...you can use it anyway you make sense of it...
