I think I need to add a step at the end of my workflow that says something like, "OK, step away for a bit, and then come back and look at the image as if you have never seen it before.  As if you were the buyer, looking to see if it satisfies the need you have for the image."

This is the stage to be brutal - to determine if you have done all you can to evoke the desired effect, and not just "get by" with an "adequate" solution.

Being lazy by nature, this is difficult for me.

I frequently let the image rest a day before making my decision about adjusting further.  There is nothing wrong with that approach.  I also have another person look at it as well...

I'm my own toughest critic but another pair of eyes is the most valuable tool I have...
