This was my hardest adjustment.  When I set the shadow, it went real dark and was not sure if that was the way to go.  I then used RGB to adjust the color cast and finished up in Elements using the highlights/shadows control to brighten the image a bit.

Looks like you might have set the highlight as a shadow point. 

They are real close together and if you miss the click on the menu you get the opposite effect. 

If you saved the curve you can move the shadow point to a shadow and rest the highlight..
You should not have had to work that hard to fix the image...
