I tried to vary the color of the pebbles on the shore,then I moved the curve  in the upper 16 boxes of the lightness curve around to suggest light spilling in from one o'clock.

Greg,when I viewed this image here it seemed lighter than when I composed it.I downloaded it and compared and they seem identical.When I work in PSE 6 I use a black background,could this cloud my perception?

Could be but it looks really cyan here....
I use PSE7 with a black background a lot of the time and I do not get these kinds of reults....

Do you have a neutral set in the image??

The waters look cyan...
