Brian,
Watch out for blocked up shadows. 
The lightness part of this correction should be very slight and you can use The thresholding techniques from last week to find the "significant shadows" and "significant highlights" that you want to set.

When you make a straight line correction in this case you do not really make the shape of the pumpkins stand out.  this one really benefits from curving the Saturation channel.

If you have time and you want to try it again you might play a bit in the saturation curve and see what you can do there...

Any better?  The first is a straight line saturation curve and the second approximates the curve you suggested.

The curve version does look a bit flat but the color is great...
