I used the Lab curves for this. I noticed that the eyes have a highlight from the left so I tried to lighten the image to give the impression of lots of light (maybe sun) coming from that direction to shine on the fur.

Nicely done...the eyes are bright but not radioactive...good neutral...good work...

Nice Lemurs. Did you apply more saturation on the version without mask?

Not really. I found that bumping up the a channel as in the screenshot made it look more 'saturated'.
