I used the white water for the highlight and neutral, and for shadow I used a shadow on the rock cliff. Worked in LAB. I do notice that there will be blown out areas in the water,

Going to do a remake after seeing the second one Thomas did which I see is much better.

Used the cliff for shadow, and the white water for highlight and neutral, the changed the shadow curve to lesson the brightness.

I think you went too far with the highlight threshold. see screen shot. Try to go for some compromise where you just start to see the white dots appear. Shot 2
Also fear not the saturation slider in LAB...it is your friend....
