Greg,
I understand that the angle of the pointer in the hue clock tells you the hue. But what does the length of the hand show? Is it saturation? Brightness?
Also, in the stand-alone hue clock the pointer sometimes is white inside and sometimes it's dark. What does that show?

Question about hue clock.
The length of the arm is the saturation. The more saturated the color the longer the arm.
A neutral is a dot in the center.
If i understand the question correctly what you are seeing is the display changing to accommodate the brightness. Dark letters on a dark hue clock would be hard to read so at a certain point Mike reverses the text color so you can see it based on brightness of the pixels you are mousing over at the time.

Jay,
It is the pixel values that define the boarder around the bar. If the visual contrast is too low the clock switches between white and black to try to make the arm move visible. No hidden meaning besides "I sure hope you can see the bar" Try it on a light blue...the arm color changes and when the line is hard to see in the center it should pop over to white.
