It is an interesting effect that you get by setting a neutral in RGB.  The linkage allows you to adjust the overall tonality of the image without introducing color shifts.  It's like you create a virtual L channel.  Normally in RGB you start moving all three channels around as much as you do for this image and you get nasty color shifts.

For your image you have chosen good tonal differences for the neutrals.  You could even go further and try to find a third.  The technique then becomes setting the tonal range of the image by adjusting the three points like a shadow highlight and neutral.
