You might have to buy me a cup of coffee for that...lol
Seriously this is one of the more difficult images in the class.
It is the extra added bonus that  everyone complains about.

It is also the image we are going to post to the gallery so everyone can vote.

Suggestions to follow later this morning...hang in there

To get into the ball park fast.....

1) Duplicate the background layer in PS or PSE and set the copied layer to "screen" mode.  Flatten the layer.

2) Open in CM and up the saturation to about 1.5 or so.  Then move the blue end of the B channel back until the skin looks right and the sky is a bit more natural.

This is not the final solution...it just gets you closer...the issue here is the blue cast in the shirts.

Keep curving on this one..go slow and think about what color you are trying to kill and ways you could do that.  I can think of about 3 so far...

Just send me that address for the Starbucks card!

I hate the cyan sky, the posterization in some highlight areas, the inability to get consistency in the whiteness of the T-Shirts, and the general resulting flatness.  (Other than that, its a great correction!)  I worked on those T Shirts forever.  Every time I would adjust to white in one area I created a new problem in another.  And no luck finding an effective neutral.

I'll work on it tonight with this pointer and see if I can do better . . .

There are many things you can do with the image to get it in a better place...this image will teach you all about diminishing returns.....

A tough image.  The reason this image is given so early in the class is so that we can revisit it later on, using masks to keep the detail in the sky as well as the shadows.

OK Guys, here is try #2.  I used the "by the numbers" approach (pushing all the channels in a highlight to the highest number in RGB, all the channels in a shadow to the lowest number in RGB, and all the channels in a midtone to the average of the channels) as best as I could recall it.  I would say the colors were helped overall, but still some trouble areas . . . blue shadows, pale cyan sky, and one of the guys in the middle has a very crimson nose.  I then tried to pull out the shadowy faces in Lab as much as I could without posterization.  I would say the result is somewhat better, but no winner yet.

I could try masking next, but is there some other non-making approach I should try first?

Well,
If you start outside of CM and apply a background layer copy of the image using "screen" as the layer type that gets the image into a better position for adjustments.  You can then go into CM in RGB mode and try a BTN approach but the blue shadows are really in the "masking zone"  The sky as well.

You can get close...

Brian,
GregM has thrown down the glove...so to speak...I hope by the end of class all can match or surpass his effort.
