My approach to this was not as simple as your solution, but I think it worked out.

I'm not even going to ask what you did...

You hit all the marks...The faces are all in the correct "range" the shadows are black not blue and you have decent tonal range maybe a tad contrasty but the web does strange things to images...

As usual, I just made it harder than it had to be . . . then saw the solution and saw how simple it could be.  In general had things in reverse order, and worked by direct manipulation of the curve rather then exclusively with end points.  I'm not going to show you my curves ... too embarassing.
