This is just a shadow, highlight,no neutral adjustment in Lab. I pushed the saturation to  about 1.15.In PS I openedshad/highlight and set all the sliders to 0 especially the color corection then I move the highlight sliders till I got a little color in the (my)left side of the face, then a touch of sharpening. There's an object at about 2 o'clock that should be removed.GregM

What a nice image....
There is a very subjective part of the process that images like this brings out...

Since there was no further instruction besides "Improvements" you could do this as well...

Copy the image to a new layer with a mask set to multiply at 65% Using the paintbrush feathered...Brush black onto the mask to restore her hair to the lighter exposure but not completely...flatten and save.  I wanted to darken the background and maximize the lighting on her face.  Burning the background left me with odd color shifts...Multiply did not...It also did not require too much adjustment to recover the highlight side of the face.

Open in CM and do a BTN correction on the shadow and highlight in RGB. I did set a clock on the Left Eye close to the nose. I wanted that part of her eye nearly neutral.  As it worked out it was almost exactly so...very little mid tone adjustment there...

I did not sharpen....

Since you know where the picture was taken, the location has an emotional connection for you.Looked at as a face, hair, eyes, nose, etc a drastic crop gives a different image.I want to keep the porcelain pallor of the skin on the left as much as possible.GregM
