Again well handled...I agree the contrast can be an issue here but you should think about "significant highlights"  in this case the highlight can be opened until the torch is the brightest thing in the image.  If the sky blows out a bit it is ok but the torch is a significant part of the image and you should think about making it the highlight point.  you want details in the torch.  See shot2. 

Again I have attached the ACV file you can load and compare...the bump at the top of the curve opens the darkest shadows a bit on the right side of the face.

Thanks Greg, very helpful.  However my system is declining to open your .acv file.
What program do you use to look at acv images?

Curvemeister....

1)open the image in photoshop then open CM
2)click the load button on the lower right
3)navigate to the acv file and open it.
