I started using the CM wizard in Lab . . . but then got carried away and forgot to log each step I used for this effort.  So sorry - I can't say exactly how I got here: I'll remember to use a notebook next time.

So far so good....
Try adding a small lizard tail to the shadow end of the curve as shown in shot1.jpg  This will open up the shadow end of the curve and not mess up the rest of the image...Try to boost the color a bit as well..you should do this in LAB so you don't add a color shift to the shadows...

Greg
Here is another attempt, prompted by the Week 2 exercise - better, I think.

It is more open in the shadows but you have lost control of the highlights.

You should remember the "significant highlights" phrase...You want detail in any area that is significant to the image.  In this case the horses are very important.  They should have detail in the brightest areas. shot1.jpg is your original.

To fix this on your posted image adjust the highlight end of the L curve in lab and give the middle tones an adjustment. shot2.jpg

Finally add some saturation using the slider.  You will have to highlight the number and type the value to get 1.15 in the saturation slider dialog.  Shot3.jpg

Give it a try and see what happens...Good stuff so far...
