I feel more confident with masks now.
I used the G Channel mask and popped the colours with a and b channel. I then lightened the image a bit more by moving the L channel. Maybe I should have rather curved it, but it does not look like I lost detail.

What an interesting way to go about this...do you find the trees in the back to be too bright??  I know that is always an issue but they are a small part of the overall image.

Did you try these with L or K to isolate the letters on the wall only??
Not that your correction is wrong...I'm mostly curious now as to what your thought process was...

I used the G channel and just went boldly forth.
The trees in the background might be a smidgen bright but I thought it gave the overall picture a friendlier feeling.
