I did two versions of this.  On the first one, I forgot to check out my results with some hue clocks--and I knew you would do that!  Interesting, when I did the second version and added hue clocks and brought my black point further in than in the first example, I think the results are better.  Unless one wants newsprint to be sort of gray.  Also interesting how many pixels I had to chop off in both the highlight and shadow to get the bleed through out.

Well for the exercise you want to remove the grayness of the news print...that is the little histogram bump you noticed when you looked at the second correction.

You got it right....and you saw the change needed..good stuff...
