Steve tassels

well, to break the ice...

I could (should?) have done all of the above then saved the mask, disabled the mask, apply CM, then New mask, paste, then edit. 

(I wonder if someone could make that easier.)

Steve this can be done in 1 pass through CM..

Open the image in LAB and mask off the tassels as you have done...
Then Rotate the A and B channels until you have a nice neutral gray tassel.
Then Curve the L channel to make them black.

Hint..Soften the curve on the mask a bit so that some of the shadows show up...this allows the color correction to bleed into the shadows....

Sort of...you want the shadows to be visible in the mask as well so that they are not red.  Instead of a hard line mask soften it by adjusting the Mask curve...
You can do that while still in CM.
