Hello.

I had some difficulty with this image.  I selected the gold to make sure that it would not be dimmed.  I used Lab mode with the B channel mask.  What do yo think of it?

I decided to try this image again because I really was not satisfied with my first try.  I sleeted the gold along with the top half of the image.  I then inverted the selection.  I  used the B channel as a mask with some adjustments.  I adjusted the L channel.  Finally, I moved the saturation slider to the left rather than the right (applied some desaturation).  I believe this try is better than the previous one.  What do you think of it?

While B is a good choice for this image you can get even further by looking at the saturation mask.  Apply a light to medium blur using the mask commands in CM.  Start by balancing the exposure over the two halves of the image.  Then adjust the saturation using the LAB slider.

Hello.

You suggest a blur under the mask command.  There are four options for blur; (1) none, (2) light, (3) medium and (4) wide.  Please explain exactly what each option for blur under mask performs?

It adds a light Gaussian blur to the mask in pixels.  I'll see If i can find the exact number of pixels that it blurs....
This allows the transition from masked area to unmasked to be gradual and help hide the mask from the viewer.

I found that it was very instructive just to try the different levels of blurring to see what it would give on the masks that I developed.

I'm thinking it is 1, 8 and 10 for the Blur values...Mike if you are watching can you confirm?

I decided to re-do this image.  This time I used the S channel as a mask with blur set to wide.  I believe this is the best one so far.  What do you think of this image?

I think it is much better and you can still open the shadows and mid-tones as shown...
Then if you add some saturation you have it...
