I started by selecting the upper darker half of the image in order to eventually brighten it. I used a b channel mask to deselect the gold figures. I then brightened and saturated (too much?) the top part part of the image and saved it (first image below).

I reopened the saved image, selected only the bottom part and then slightly darked and increased the saturation of the bottom part (second image below).

It looks like the mask is holding the rest of the image back as well.
Is there a better mask choice that allows you to get the two halves of the image closer together before you go after the color??

I started by deselecting the bright part in photoshop and then used a b mask to deselect the gold figures. I then increased the brightness but I didn't do a very good job with the mask. I saved the image and re-opened in CM, applied an L channel mask, and increased the saturation while decreasing the brightness. Far from perfect but most of the other things that I tried were a lot worse.

Richard,
There is too big of a loss in the colors in the upper half...The deeply saturated colors have been reduced to pastels.
I'd try this again and use the "KISS" method.  Start by getting the tone correct across the image then go after color.
