I tried both G and L channel masks and prefer the result with the L channel.

I would agree the L channel mask is better.  The Idea is to increase saturation in the shadows.  the G Channel mask is going to be dependent on how much green is already in the shadows and where in the shadows it is located.

The L channel mask is based solely on Brightness...
