I tried both RGB and LAB, and I prefer the result in RGB. The curves are different and are the result of a bit of trial and error but I couldn't seem to find something that was better.

Richard,
Your LAb curve has a very bad flat spot in it that is causing the muddy appearance in the tonal range.  Shot1

You can get much more out of this image if you do not try to force the tones too much.  Once you have opened the shadows place your mouse on the horses neck and look at the curve line.  Use the worm on the line to help you find the place you need to pull the curve back to bring out the shape of the horses neck.  Shot2

The RGB suffers from the same issue..the flat spot is a bad thing in the master or L channels...

I have tried to follow your suggestions and the hint and I have eliminated the flat spot in the previous curve. My curve isn't quite as steep as in the hint as I wanted to avoid making the horses too light.

Richard,
Overall this is much better...Just a slight drop in the Master RGB as shown makes the horse necks have a much better shape.

The flat spots are really bad...Glad you got past it...
