Totally forget all from the friday call for that. Somebody remember?
This is with the hints from the video. Okay, black now, but lost all details and still have red reflections on the stones.
As a first try...

Soften the mask by curving the mid-tones a bit to open up enough to get rid of the red edges if you have them and the red shadows on the stone.
It's a balancing act....
Enough mask to get the job done but not so much as to leave the shadows...

Hi Greg,
I'm not satisfied with the whole, because of detail lost.
What was the mask you choose on our friday call? Think it was another one, than as shown on the video hint.

I used the A channel of LAB. Curved it around a bit to make the fringes work.

Hm, I think I used the a-channel to.
Okay, I'll try again....

Have this now (attachment 1).
Better details, but now I have problems with the funny lines (attachment 2).
What is this? Jpg-artefact?

Hi Greg,
had the mask only in cm.
Saved the file, but mask is not saving. Good to know.
It was something like the attached one.
Problem is in the mask. Hm...Why? Too funny curve?

exactly...the curve is too extreme. See if you can do the same effect without the Red curve...

Oh, okay. Curve goes red, when too extreme. Didn't notice that.
Here is another curve, which is not that extreme, but same effect.
