Art.  MY BAD.  I did not update the Class materials for CMYK to the new version of CM.  Instead of presets like those shown in the document you not have the ability to set the GCR you want based on the image.  I know another adjustment to fiddle with...but it really makes a difference when you make a K channel mask later in the class.

We also had a lot of people wanting to fade the effect in CM so they did not have to go out to PS and fade the layer.  That is the Fade slider you see.

If the instructions say MAX or Heavy GCR then use 100% Medium would be 50% and light 25%  This is an Ink to paper adjustment.  What this is doing is simulating the amount of black ink that would be added to the image to replace colored inks to keep the total ink value under whatever is specified by the commercial printer.

What we do with it is leverage the ability to fade the brightness of a mask by using the K channel and GCR slider to make a more transmissive mask and allow you as the artist to have more freedom to choose.

Greg -- no problem, I'm just wondering how we evaluate with respect to an image what level of GCR to choose since we can't see how it affects the image.  I may be mistaken, but I think with the prior presets version the image changed immediately to reflect the GCR change.

Cheers,

You should see the effect immediately when you use the slider.  Otherwise click the compare button to re-fresh the image and Let me know if your's does not update.

You would have to make a pretty large change to see the effect in all channel view.  try switching to K channel view so you see a B&W image and then adjust teh GCR.

No effect to the image with the slider. I can see the effect only in the K channel when clicking compare, but it sticks there. At 50% the image is almost entirely blown out in the K channel. But then when I click all channel view nothing is changed. When I click apply the program closes but the image does not change.

Ok,

As I suspected...The GCR update bug has not been fixed.

Screen shots below show...
1) Initial state.
2) K channel Curve applied to image.
3) image and GCR setting before clicking "Compare"
4) Image and compare after Clicking compare
5) New GCR setting after clicking compare.

I'll remind Mike about the bug.

I can not get a point I set in ALL rgb..
Reset does not do it. I have closed the program and restarted again and my old point is still there.
How do I eliminate a curve point?

In week ! with the number 1 image you show a curve box that goes to 255, same as photoshop.
In Curvemeister my boxes only go to 100. How do I get a 255 box?

Sorry about the delay...we have 7 inches of wet heavy snow and getting around is a real trick tonight...
To delete a point on the curve. Select it by clicking on it and it will have a highlight circle around it;  then press the delete key.

Greg:

I would like to try the channel splitting exercise with the free layer mask tool for photoshop elements.  I picked up the link from this weeks notes.  I've pasted the 4 layer mask 'programatic' elements into the effects portion of my photoshop elements 8 program but it doesn't load.  do you have any idea what I can do.  I held down the shift key as the editor opened from the welcome page when photoshop elements opened, but nothing happened.
