i think there is not much to make better.
there is no detail in the hilights.
I have spent a couple of minutes on this picture.
here is the result. Done it with Curvemeister!

I think Frits has done pretty well, given the lack of highlight detail.  I would add that the white areas could be given a more natural tint, perhaps with masking to keep pure white in the remainder of the image.

I have thinking of doing more with the picture.
Perhaps later.
I am busy with making a DVD from my grandchild and solve some problems.
I also must investigate the gallery manual.

2-photoshop histogram-adjusted black
3-variations-added blue
3-curvemeister-adj skintones only
4-sharpened ends of hair and eyes
5-masked floor and sofa - to restore detail and remove noticeable bluish cast

Remaining problem: the highlights are really blown and do not seem recoverable

I had also such a result. but I thought it could better.
I used the picture what I have placed first.
Make this photo the right color with Curvemeisters skin 1.
After that I  used in PSE 4 the retouch-brush first on the should right down.
Afther that  it was right , I used again the retouch brush with as basic the shoulder color.
Also I used the smudge tool.
that's all.

This is indeed an interesting image.  The blue channel is far from blown out, and may be used to recover most of the over-exposed areas.

I'm about to get on a long flight and will see if I have some spare time (and screen room!) to do a version of this image.
