This is the software I was thinking of which can plot image colors as a pixel cloud (overlaid over a printer gamut) for visualizing which colors might be difficult to reproduce in print: www2.chromix.com/colorthink/pro/pro_grapher (scroll down to the animated GIF)...
How useful this would be I'm not sure. As mentioned, it really depends how accurate it would be.
It would be pretty cool though ;)
