Over Easter I went to Strahan on the west coast of tasmania.
Its an amazing place. A very small town set on the edge of a world heritage wilderness area. it was originally set up as a port for mining and forestry. In the recent past it has been the scene for some very big campaigns to preserve the wilderness. It is mostly untouched temperate rainforest. as it was just too impenetrable to be be logged very far form the river systems that run through it. Sarah Island in the harbour was one of the harshest penal colonies in Australia after settlement. Its a rainy place (hence the rainforest) with only 15.7 days of clear weather annually according to Wikipedia. The nearby town of Queenstown is famous for the degradation mining bought to the environment. I will be posting some images form this trip for discussion.
