I use an Xrite DTP22, which has now been replaced by the Eye One, together with XRite's ColorShopX software for interpreting the readings.  This is a rather expensive instrument - $1500 or more.  People on a budget can search this equipment out on eBay.    My recommendation would be to experiment first with a scanner and determine how much additional benefit you would get from using a spectro.

A spectro is a handy device for quickly determing an accurate Lab color from a small region of a print, or any reflective object.

The skin tone images can either be emailed to me at mike AT curvemeister.com, or uploaded to the gallery.  If there are more than just a few of them, you may want to use XP's web publishing wizard:
