Martin and Julie, how do you do the b/w conversion? Does which technique you choose depend on some of the qualities of the original colour version?

I've tried about a million ways to edit this shot. It never comes out looking very interesting -- plus the sky in the back is blown out -- but I have a feeling that, with the right touch (obviously not mine), it could be great. Or at least more interesting. Ideas/thoughts/techniques/subversions very...

You did ask what can be done to it, not necessarily what can be done to it to make it more acceptable to photo clubs around the world...

Ah, this shows me what's wrong with my version - still not enough contrast in certain areas. The supersaturated yellow is a brilliant touch, as is the up-close-and-personal crop. I'm humbled to see how much work goes into producing an image.
This one is great in b/w but I also really like the colour version - how the boys all seem to be wearing the same colour shorts, which makes them stand out from the wall...
