Here is my try. I did the K channel thing but found it did not reduce the colours much, perhaps I should have taken them further buy if i tried they turned into a blob.

I made the mask with the L channel then put it in a layer mask in PS and cleaned up the mask a bit then changed the blend mode to multiply, then copied that layer to multiply and lowered the opacity on that layer then flattened the layers, then lightened the tree on the left side just a bit.<br /><b...
