I tried Lab and HSB and set neutrals on both images and used the highlight threshold just so that I could still see the white head of the seagull. My other place of concern was the corner of the second story of the blue building on the left, along with the seagull the detail seemed to be lost first....

Moved the white threshold in and then set a suitable shadow point and then adjusted the curve for the highlights. I was happy with the result the areas of concern for me were the white horses, skin tones, overall colour and controlling the areas outside the merry go around.

This time I used Lab and the thresholds to adjust the image and added some additional curving to the L channel.

Again I started with the wizard and set  b, w and n. When I set the neutral I watched the hue clock carefully to ensure I found the best I could. I used the brightness slider.  That’s it. I can see from the curves how I could have achieved this manually.

I used the wizard with Lab and set  b, w and n points,  no slider adjustments. Then I adjusted the L curve.
