Hello all, I think focusing on realistic images as Julie suggests is an excellent way into abstract art. (And I can hear Greg saying -- and into realistic images too!) Vivian Maier's work quite directly invites that way of looking. Here are a few of her images I've been looking at recently: http://w...

Hi Ganna, Kandinsky had several different abstract styles, so I'm wondering which you find confusing. Possible to post links to one or two? My wife doesn't particularly like abstract art, and when I show her one of my images, such as the recent one you're referring to, she says, "Oh, that would mak...

Ganna, One approach: About a realistic photograph we might notice focus, color rendition, exposure, contrast, etc. But can we articulate how we get from these aspects to finding the image "interesting", which, after all, is what counts most (an image may have proper focus, color rendition, etc and s...

Julie and Martin, Interesting comments! Julie, glad you like this newer version as well. I too see a greater sense of depth (which may be due to increasing the contrast) with more latitude for evocation. Also, a sense of a much larger territory to explore (which is the way I think of viewing some ab...

Hi Julie, I think of Piccure+ as part of "pre-sharpening" in which you undo or correct the effects of various sources of blurring such as the anti-aliasing or low-pass filter (which the Nikon d7200 doesn't have, but it is subject to other artifacts, including), lens aberrations, and other blurring r...

Martin, Many thanks for your idea to apply PC+ to Marsh Grass in the Wind. The final result (after several subsequent transformations -- I can't blame this entirely on PC+) is attached. I think of it now as Oxidized Wall, something you might notice while just walking around. (You should be careful w...

Martin, I agree that for correcting lens blur there's not much difference between PC+ and FM. I haven't used PC+ for motion blur, and probably won't, because I don't tend to photograph moving objects, animate or inanimate. It's not something I have much of an eye for. I also agree that Topaz InFocus...

Martin, Good questions and some informative and ...diplomatic answers from Lui. I'm finding that with P+ the Strong CA setting sometimes introduces artifacts, or smears areas of the image, which I intend to ask Lui about. So far, I'm obtaining the best results with the Quality+ setting and sharpen ...
