There are a number of things we can do with this image. One of the more important ones is reducing the shadow cast on the upper part of the wreath.

Click on the wgCMYK radio button, and set the GCR drop down to Maximum Black.

To see the just black channel click on the Black button either on the toolbar (circled), or under the View tab of the ribbon.

Notice that the shadow is neither the darkest nor the lightest area of the black plate.

Click to see an individual channel, black in this case

The black channel, in all its glory.

Reducing the shadow without also lightening the purple flowers is a matter of modifying the correct section of the black curve.

As a further refinement, add more curve points to bring some of the black curve back to it's original location along the diagonal.

A similar modification is possible using the magenta curve, with GCR set to Medium Black. The two circled points at the bottom left of the curve accomplish this, while retaining the detail in the yellow flowers.

The upper curve point, indicated by the arrow, brings out the gold print.

That's all folks! Happy curving.

For best viewing, adjust your monitor until you can see all the squares.
