This example is really an "invsible ink" puzzle, and not a demonstration of a practical technique. The 1 and 2
are barely, if at all, visible.
I start by using an extreme curve, similar to what we used in the last example.
After a rather extreme curve, (see the red color warning) the 1 and 2 are certainly more visible than before, but extreme images call for extreme measures.

Using a very extreme curve, it is possible to make the 1 and 2 stand out as white numbers on a black background!
A curve like this does a great job of making the numbers stand out. It would also make mincemeat out of any midtones that the image might have, in effect creating a negative image. By coincidence, this image has no midtones, so I can get away with an extreme maneuver like this.
